Jim Large Announces Campaign for Mayor of St. Petersburg

St. Petersburg, FL Today, Jim Large announced his candidacy for Mayor of St. Petersburg on the 52nd anniversary of his 1974 swearing-in as a firefighter, bringing more than five decades of public service and leadership experience to the race.

Large has served the City of St. Petersburg in a variety of leadership roles, including eighteen years as Fire Chief. First sworn into service in 1974, he is recognized as the longest-serving firefighter in the city’s history. Throughout his career, he has worked directly in neighborhoods, prepared the city for hurricanes, and led through emergencies and crises — experiences he says have shaped his approach to leadership.

“For the last five decades, I have had the honor and privilege to serve our city,” said Large. “I have been in St. Petersburg’s neighborhoods during some of our hardest days. I have prepared our city for hurricanes and led through all types of crises. Success has always come from experience, strong teams, and a shared commitment to our community, and I look forward to building on that foundation to help lead St. Petersburg toward an even stronger future.”

As St. Petersburg continues to grow, Large says the city needs experienced, steady leadership to meet new challenges.

“Today I am proud to announce my candidacy for Mayor of St. Petersburg,” Large said. “I have been encouraged by many in our community to bring my experience and steady leadership to City Hall. Leadership takes courage to act, not just talk. I am prepared to meet those challenges and move our city forward.”

Large’s campaign will focus on three priorities:

Public Safety — Supporting police and fire rescue departments to ensure neighborhoods and residents remain safe.

Infrastructure — Addressing aging and declining roads, water systems, stormwater, sewer, and traffic concerns with real solutions and long-term planning.

Disaster Recovery & Resilience — Building on his experience leading through storms to create a readiness and recovery plan that strengthens emergency preparedness and makes St. Petersburg a model for resiliency.

“Together, with your support, we will build a safer, stronger, and more resilient St. Petersburg,” Large said.
